An evidence-based, multidisciplinary and collaborative approach towards implementing a behaviourally orientated curriculum in a Department of Education Autism Preschool (2018)

Abstract Background The National Council for Special Education (2015) outlined how children with Autism should be provided with a high quality early intervention pre-school education employing an evidence-based, multidisciplinary and collaborative approach. The PEAK Relational Training System is an evidence based, behaviourally orientated evaluation and curriculum guide aiming to support the development of language and cognitive skills in children with Autism. Through employing a model of Behavioural Skills Training (BST), educators may be supported collaboratively to implement the PEAK curriculum. The current project therefore aims to explore the impact, efficacy and utility of the PEAK curriculum in a Department of Education Autism preschool. Methods Six children; two females and four males between the ages of three and five years of age and their teachers; one primary school teacher and two special needs assistants, participated in the current study. All children had been independently diagnosed with autism and attended a Department of Education preschool for children with Autism. Baseline assessments (language and school readiness) were conducted on children and intervention goals were identified by the researchers. Staff were then trained and supported by the researchers on how to implement the identified goals. Results The intervention is currently ongoing however preliminary data has provided some evidence of an improvement in children’s learning and development. Conclusion The current study may provide insight into the efficacy of employing a behaviourally orientated evaluation and curriculum guide (PEAK) as an evidence-based, multidisciplinary and collaborative approach towards the preschool education of children with Autism.
